Basic Textile Printing


The aim of this basic textile course is to give the students a grounding in Printing, painting and dyeing fabrics. This is a unique skill that takes time and patience, which this ten-week course hopes to provide.

The course will focus on how to design and draw imagery suitable for clothing, as well as how to copyright unique designs. Students will be taught the relevant skills to create repeat designs for screen-printing that can be used for bags, scarfs, T-shirts, jumpers and various other items of clothing.

From the beginning, students will have workshops tailored to their interests and working skill levels to build on what they know. This allows students to gain confidence while learning new techniques that will enable them to choose their next area of interest that they wish to explore in depth.

Practical Textiles


The aim of this project is to teach basic practical textile skills. Practical textile techniques learned will cumulate in a small varied portfolio of functional and decorative items. These will include clothes, upholstery, bags, toys and wall hangings. Knowledge gained during the project will be taken away in a provided sketchbook.

  1. You will learn both decorative and practical techniques to create textile-based items.
  2. You will learn the importance of color harmony, this will be achieved through tutor guided workshops.
  3. You will gain a basic understanding of various practical techniques for working textiles.

Week 1

Making An Apron
- Choosing a colour using a colour wheel.
- Using a sketch or image to make a stencil.
- Resizing the stencil to the desired size.
- Stencilling or painting the image onto the apron.

Week 2

Designing T-Shirts
- Selecting an animal to draw.
- Arranging layout of the design.
- Drawing and resizing the image.
- Drawing and painting the image onto a T-shirt.

Week 3

Tie Dying A T-Shirt
- Choosing the pattern and colours.
- Preparing the T-Shirts pattern.
- Mixing the dye.
- Bag layout.

Week 4

Finishing Tie Dye T-Shirt
- Undoing the T-shirt.
- Rinsing and spinning shirts.
- Drawing an image onto a bag.
- Painting the bag.

Week 5

Silk Scarves
- Designing floral or geometric motifs.
- Stretching the silk using frames.
- Drawing imagery using the gutter.
- Sampling colours using an embroidery hoop.
- Painting the silk scarf.

Week 6

Silk Painted Jewellery
- Pressing the silk scarves.
- Using swatches to assemble jewellery.
- Making a silk tie.
- Selecting imagery for wall hanging.

Week 7

Wall Hanging
- Choosing materials for the hanging.
- Making and painting a stencil.
- Adding applique and painted image onto the wall hanging.
- Working as a group to select an animal.

Week 8

Hat Making
- Screen printing motif onto tie dye T-shirt.
- Designing Layout for cap.
- Painting the design onto the cap.
- Drawing animal motif from week seven.

Week 9

Making Screen Prints
- Cutting out silhouette of week eight animal on paper.
- Paper screen printing animal in four different colours.
- Refine and finish animal in black and white.
- Drawing animal design onto acetate and coating the screen.

Week 10

Wrapping Up
- Screen printing animal design onto a jumper.
- Packaging.
- Putting together sketchbook.
- Finishing any unfinished projects.
