Basic Design Course


Overview

The aim of this course is to give the students a basic grounding in drawing and mark making techniques. This will be done through various half day workshops spread out over twenty weeks. The course aims to build on existing skills with new skills and techniques.

The workshops will include basic colour techniques, drawing skills, stencil and stamp making and mark making skills.

By the end of this course, the students will have created a varied sketch book and their own colour wheel. They will be able to use these as a future guide for basic designs and creating unique colour palettes.


Learning Outcomes

  1. Students will have a clear understanding of the colour wheel, and how to use it to create and use a unique colour palette.
  2. Drawing skills will be improved as well as various mark making skills.
  3. Basic stamp making skills will be mastered.
  4. Students will decide if design is the right path for them.
  5. The course will provide training & skills that the student can carry forward to further their pursuit after the course.
  6. Students can exhibit their work through Minerva at events & venue’s such as the Hexham Abbey Christmas exhibition and more.
  7. Students will have the opportunity to sell their work in the Minerva shop.

  9. Skills Portfolio: It is one of our end goals to allow students to build up a portfolio so that they may enter college or further education - Independence is a natural progression of finding your own feet.
  10. ALL students will receive a ‘Minerva certificate of education’ which can be used to further education and skills.

Week 1

Still life in pencil, pen and paint.

Week 2

Look at the colour wheel. Marbleising paper.

Week 3

Wax art. Brushow. Tea staining.

Week 4

Block printing (card paper). Tearing paper design with black ink, masking tape.

Week 5

Shrink art to print with spirograph.

Week 6

Texture techniques with water colours, including splatter sponging techniques.

Week 7

Flower drawing. Stencilling.

Week 8

Blind drawing (mark a making), Crosshatching. Line drawing. Right hand left hand.

Week 9

Mono printing. Positive and negative drawing.

Week 10

Photocopies and overlays. Animal silhouettes.

Week 11

Collage and mixed media. Colour palette.

Week 12

Floral and shell drawings. Liner. Geometric squares with textures inside.

Week 13

Lino cutting. Leap printing positive and negative.

Week 14

Paper screens. Screen printing. Motif design.

Week 15

Sewing on paper. Paper making.

Week 16

Melted crayon art. Foil art.

Week 17

Fluid art. Design layout.

Week 18

Decoupage. Block printing on tissue paper.

Week 19

Silk painting. Tie dying.

Week 20

Putting portfolio together and sketch book.

Basic Fine Arts


Overview

This project aims to give students a basic understanding of fine arts materials and their use. Each workshop taught will build on existing skills learned, with new skills being learned each week. Practical use of materials in creating an art piece, as well as inspiration for projects, will be covered from many different angles. This project includes a group project that can be worked on independently via co-ordination, or as fully part of a group.


Learning Outcomes

  1. Students will learn to work as a group to create a piece of artwork. This will include planning co-ordination and communication skills.
  2. Students will be introduced to basic techniques and a wide range of material to work with them.
  3. Students will have a basic grounding in various fine art techniques. This will allow them to make an informed decision about the type of art they would like to do.

Transferrable Skills

  1. Coordinating with other people on a project.
  2. Communication, compromise, and respect of other people’s ideas.
  3. Practical application of a technique to a project.
